Cole Palmer from Chelsea and Rico Lewis from Manchester City have received their inaugural senior calls-ups to Gareth Southgate's England squad ahead of Euro 2024 qualifying matches against Malta and North Macedonia.

Palmer scored his maiden Chelsea goal against former club City on Sunday to earn a stoppage-time penalty in their 4-4 Premier League draw.

Chelsea’s Cole Palmer

Cole Palmer has experienced remarkable success during his journey through youth football. His performances with his local club garnered the interest of both Manchester United and City who competed fiercely to secure his services; ultimately, he chose City due to their superior training facilities, although has since made waves at Chelsea FC.

This summer, 21-year-old Marcos Alonso joined Chelsea from City for a reported PS40 million fee and immediately made an impactful mark at Stamford Bridge by scoring an injury time penalty to deny City victory during their 4-4 Premier League draw on Sunday at Stamford Bridge - earning himself an invitation into England senior squad as a result of this performance.

Many of those closest to him have been impressed by his positive attitude and work-rate. Often found tracking back, he can find space with ease before driving forward with the ball at his feet.

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud received high praise for his performance against former club Manchester City on Saturday, earning high praise from Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher who praised his composure as he scored against City to increase confidence further and the striker is looking forward to taking on Malta and North Macedonia when their Euro 2024 qualifying campaigns kick off next Friday - they begin at home against Malta before heading away three days later!

Manchester City’s Rico Lewis

Rico Lewis has established himself as an important first-team regular under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and his efforts have earned him an invitation to Gareth Southgate's senior England squad for two Euro 2024 qualifying matches versus Malta on Friday and North Macedonia the following Monday at Wembley Stadium and Wembley respectively.

He became a surprise deadline-day signing at Chelsea this summer and is the youngest member of this new-look England squad. On Sunday he haunted his former club by scoring late penalty against them and has continued his good form in Premier League action this season.

Lewis has been one of City's standout performers in Europe, scoring crucial goals against RB Leipzig and Young Boys away victories. Throughout his youth career with England - from youth level through under-21s - Lewis progressed well, earning four caps in 2017 before winning an age-group World Cup with Carsley's Under-21 side and seven more caps under Carsley in Toulon Tournament win with Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa receiving his call up after James Maddison, Callum Wilson and Lewis Dunk pulled out from their respective club matchday squads due to withdrawing their respective matchday squads due to withdrawal.

Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa

Palmer, Lewis and Konsa have shown how quickly young talent can move from club success to international recognition. All three represented England at youth levels before potentially making their senior debuts against Malta this Friday and North Macedonia next Monday during Europe 2024 qualifying matches.

Palmer, 21, is off to an impressive start this season for Chelsea, scoring a stoppage-time penalty against Manchester City in Sunday's 4-4 draw. As a versatile right-back who can also play central midfield he earned promotion from Lee Carsley's Under-21 squad this year.

Konsa, who won the 2017 Fifa Under-20 World Cup with Villa, made an impactful entrance into national set-up following an outstanding debut season with them in the Premier League. He quickly established himself at Villa's heart of defence alongside Tyrone Mings and demonstrated superior defensive metrics than most centre-backs in England's top flight.

He currently ranks among the top 10% of Premier League defenders for tackles and interceptions this season, while being played alongside Mings places him in the 94th percentile for clearances in the attacking third. All these credentials augur well for his prospects under Southgate; this will be his inaugural senior call-up; most members of the squad will report to St George's Park on Monday with further assessments planned later in the day.
