PKP Scholarly Publishing Conference 2019

The Public Knowledge Project (PKP), in partnership with the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), invites proposals for participation in the Seventh International PKP Scholarly Publishing Conference. The conference will be held at UAB in Cerdanyola del Vallès, Spain (near Barcelona) from November 20-22, 2019 with a pre-conference sprint November 18-19.

  August 2, 2017 – August 4, 2017

  The Public Knowledge Project is pleased to announce the sixth PKP International Scholarly Publishing Conference will be held in Montreal, Quebec on August 2, 3, and 4, 2017. The conference will be co-hosted by our friends at Érudit, and will take place at the Pavillon de la Faculté de l'aménagement at the Université de Montréal.

  This year’s theme is “Reclaiming Scholarship: Voice, Rights, Ownership”.

  The conference will address issues of community voice, ownership, and control as it relates to open access publishing, global knowledge creation and sharing, open educational resources, citizen rights, scholars as publishers, and open source technologies. It will explore the power of community-based approaches and invites critiques of the pervasiveness of commercial publishing models (including APCs to fund open access), closed third-party systems and software, corporate concentration of scholarly publishing services, and the general ephemerality of the Web in the academic sphere.

  The program will consist of a mixture of invited presentations, panel discussions, brief "lightning talks", a 2-day development sprint, and workshops.

  Proposals that address one or more of the following topics are especially encouraged:

  • Strengthening community connections and partnerships;
  • Amplifying diverse voices and local perspectives;
  • Ensuring usability and meaningful user involvement;
  • Supporting open and social scholarship;
  • Open technologies for open education;
  • Sustaining openness: finances and beyond;
  • Rethinking scholarly impact;
  • Platform ownership and control;

  PKP5 | Building Open Infrastructure and Programs for Digital Humanities, Publishing, and Libraries

  In collaboration with SFU’s Canadian Institute for Studies in Publishing and the Electronic Textual Cultures Lab / Digital Humanities Summer Institute at the University of Victoria, the fifth PKP scholarly publishing conference will be an opportunity for participants to engage on the topics related to building open infrastructure and programs for digital humanities, publishing, and libraries.

  PKP 2015 will see a revised format from past year's conferences, with a greater variety of workshops, development sprints, community consultations, a single track of lightning talks and invited speakers, and committee meetings. Our goal is to make the conference more engaging and useful than ever for our diverse and growing community. See the conference program for more information.

  Simon Fraser University at Harbour Centre is located in Vancouver's historic Spencer building, at the corner of Hastings and Richards streets in the city’s Heritage District. Shopping, restaurants, hotels and entertainment facilities are all minutes away.

  Harbour Centre is directly across the street from Vancouver’s transportation hub, Waterfront Station, where Skytrain, Seabus, and Westcoast Express stations conduct visitors and commuters to all parts of metro Vancouver and beyond. The Canada Line Skytrain links Waterfront Station directly to the Vancouver International Airport. Public parking is available at many locations near the campus as well.

  The Public Knowledge Project (PKP) and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) are pleased to announce the Fourth International PKP Scholarly Publishing Conference, which will be held from August 19 - 21, 2013 in Mexico City, Mexico.

  This is the first time that the PKP Conference is being held in Latin America, a region of the world that publishes almost exclusively in Open Access. The conference will provide a unique opportunity for exchange on innovative work in scholarly publishing, with a focus on the contributions of open source technologies. We look forward to hosting editors, publishers, librarians, researchers, developers, content aggregators, and PKP’s growing user community from around the world.

  Previous International PKP Scholarly Publishing conferences have brought together a remarkable array of presentations and participants from around the world. We anticipate an equally valuable experience in 2013.

• PKP Scholarly Publishing Conference 2011

  September 26, 2011 – September 28, 2011

  The Public Knowledge Project, in partnership with the Freie Universität Berlin, presented the Third International PKP Scholarly Publishing Conference from September 26 - 28, 2011 in Berlin, Germany.

  This was the first time that the PKP Conference was held outside of Vancouver, Canada, and we enjoyed meeting more members of the international scholarly publishing community. Given that the landmark Budapest Open Access Initiative was launched ten years earlier (in December 2001), the PKP conference invited explorations of the successes achieved, setbacks overcome, and lessons learned in our shared attempts to support alternative publishing solutions and to increase open access within scholarly publishing. The first and second PKP conferences brought together a remarkable array of presentations and participants from around the world, and this third event provided an equally valuable experience in 2011.
