The Indiana University Libraries provide publishing support for open access journals through the Open Journals Systems (OJS) platform, but this was not always the case. Before the launch of IUScholarWorks Journals in 2008, the Libraries collaborated with numerous scholarly journals to provide open access publishing solutions using a variety of platforms and technologies. Additionally, several of these publishing solutions involved the use of XML workflows using the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) markup standard to encode journal content. Although these projects resulted in sophisticated, customized publishing platforms, they are resource intensive and difficult to maintain when compared with OJS. In 2013, the Libraries began efforts to migrate journals using these one-off platforms into OJS.

One such journal is the Indiana Magazine of History (IMH) (http://scholarworks.iu.edu/journals/index.php/imh/), which was successfully launched in OJS in August 2014. The IMH uses sophisticated TEI encoding to continue to publish in XML through the use of the XML Galley plugin within OJS. Encoding and publishing in this manner leverages IU Libraries’ strengths in electronic text projects and XML workflows within an easy-to-use, flexible platform that IMH editors appreciate. The success of this migration opens new doors for future XML workflows for open access journals at Indiana University.
