Abstract


SciELO is an international Scientific Electronic Library Online. SciELO indexes and publishes a vast array of peer-reviewed scientific journals to promote the advancement of scientific research by facilitating the communication of its results. By April 2013, SciELO network comprises 20 collections, with 1056 journals. Certified collections comprise 11 national collections with 919 journals and two thematic collections with about 50 journals.  National collections are present in 17 countries from Latin American and Caribbean, Portugal, Spain and South Africa.

 

SciELO Brazil was the first collection of SciELO Network.  By December of 2012, the 260 Brazilian journals indexed in SciELO published more than 29,000 documents of which 86% were original and review articles. SciELO Brazil is a multidisciplinary collections of Scientific Journals: over 32% from Biological and health sciences, 28% humanities followed by agriculture and social sciences with 12%  each. In 2012, for the first time, more than 50% of the articles were published in English, with about 30% simultaneously in Portuguese and English signaling a new trend in the multilingual communication of the Brazilian research.
