Abstract

Latin America & the Caribbean (LAC&) is a region that embraces the open access movement. When analyzing the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), it is possible to see the increase, during the last 10 years, of open access journals in the region. In July 2013, the total number of open access titles from the LA&C registered at DOAJ is 1871. Brazil is the leader of the region with 917 titles. Regional projects as the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and Red de Revistas Científicas de América Latina y el Caribe, España y Portugal (RedALyC) helped spread open access in the region. The SciELO network nowadays counts 1020 titles and RedALyC is currently distributing 811 titles. Both projects are supported by government and university funds and helped spread the concept of free access. Springer is committed to the open access movement since 2004 when our Open Choice program was launched. Springer continues to develop its gold open access offerings with the acquisition of BioMed Central in 2008, the launch of SpringerOpen journals in June 2010, SpringerPlus in January 2012, and SpringerOpen Books in August 2012. SpringerOpen has decidedly adopted methods, techniques, and approaches that have been pioneered by BioMed Central, such as multiple membership models and optimized workflows, allowing for greater flexibility. In November 2010, Springer opened its first office in the city of São Paulo. How can Springer help in the development of open access in the region? The introduction of a sustainable financial model and a more international visibility can be part of our contribution to the development of Open Access in the region.
