Abstract

Our purpose is to share the experience of the implementation and development in OJS of the Scientific Journals Site of the Universidad Nacional de La Plata (UNLP)-Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educación (FaHCE) (http://www.revistas.fahce.unlp.edu.ar), through which are published, in open access, under Creative Commons licenses, the scientific journals of this Academic Unity, including the electronic editions as well as the digital versions of the published in paper format.

The UNLP, second in prestige of the universities in Argentina, publish almost forty scientific journals, 50% of them edited in FaHCE. The project Journal’s Site, which began in December 2012, with the Publications Area in charge, attained the unification of the access of the Faculty journals incorporated to the “Núcleo Básico de Revistas Científicas Argentinas” (CAICYT-CONICET). Its purpose is to facilitate the editorial management, the fulfillment of periodicity and evaluation parameters suggested by the regional and international databases, so as to increase its visibility and optimize the work times. To perform the project requisites and to apply the design, it was needed to personalize the software. The base template was modified and new templates were created to add functionalities to the main site and to the corresponding to each journal, according to   needs of the editors and these of the local academic community. These modifications were made using the technologies CSS level 3, XHTML, PHP and Smarty, maintaining the compatibility with Web navigators and observing directions of accessibility and usability.

One of the main purposes pursued by the project is the interoperability with the institutional repository Memoria Académica. During the first stage four complete electronic journals were migrated from the Plone contains manager, a digitalized paper journal was automatically charged and metadata and full text of the last number of another five journals. To automate the migration, xml archives were for each number of the journal, using the bibliographic information contained in the analytic database maintained by the Faculty Library, which feeds the repository. Now, we are working to reverse the process, to obtain the automatic deposit of the published in the repository.

Also, the users were massively charged through the importation of  XML archives, generated by an script in bash and the PDF archives of the published works ready for inclusion were automatically manipulated in shares to: (1) insert metadata in them, based in the information exported from de analytical database, using the exif tool; (2) to complete the identification of each article to include the bibliographic address and the specification of the license under which is distributed, using the pdftk tool.

After the start, we are training the diverse editorial groups so as they can manage their own journals. We are working as a team to obtain control of the tool, to which end the Area affords continuous support.
