VPS hosting for WordPress

Kazuha Nakamura (2023-01-21)

WordPress is the most popular blogging software used on the web. In fact, WordPress is one of the most used Content Management Systems (CMS) online.

WordPress is very easy to set up – it can be installed with Fantastico with one click and within seconds. Due to its popularity, there is plenty of help online when you need it.

WordPress is written in a programming language called PHP which accesses content from a MySQL database. Because it continuously extracts packets of information from servers and elsewhere, WordPress can require more memory than a live static HTML site.

WordPress and Hosting

To set up a WordPress site, you need two things: a domain name and a web host.

Google rates speed very highly these days in its ranking algorithm, so it’s important that you choose a good host to get the most out of your WordPress site.

You may find that certain plugins won’t work due to memory issues, servers can fail due to host incompetence which often leads to loss of Google rankings and sometimes Tutorial WordPress features won’t work due to bad host settings – so choosing a host is not something to rush into!

Most website owners when they start out will opt for a shared hosting plan. This is the cheapest hosting option where your website will share a server with hundreds or, sometimes, thousands of other sites.

Whereas a dedicated hosting service is a service where you rent an entire server which is not shared with anyone.

What are VPS?

Virtual Private Servers (VPS) provide dedicated server features on machines shared by other customers. This is accomplished by partitioning the physical computer into multiple servers, each capable of running its own complete operating system, and each of which can be rebooted independently.

Therefore, customers get hosting services similar to dedicated Web hosting without sacrificing performance and at a much lower price.

Another benefit of a VPS server is scalability. Extra resources (RAM, other configurations) may be added at a later date as the website grows.

Which VPS host type to use for WordPress?

The first thing to suggest is to use a Linux host instead of Windows because Linux requires a lot less resources and WordPress runs better on it.

Managed VPS Hosting or Unmanaged VPS?

You need to decide between buying a managed VPS or an unmanaged VPS hosting account. With unmanaged VPS sites you are on your own. You control it. You install and run any software you want to run on it.

If you are not comfortable doing this then unmanaged hosting is definitely not for you. However, this hosting has the advantage of being slightly cheaper as the host doesn’t have to spend as much on support. You may have to pay extra for cPanel licenses, etc.

Managed VPS services cover maintenance, monitoring, and repairs for a flat fee – they also provide varying amounts of support.

Standard VPS hosting or VPS hosting in the cloud?

Cloud computing is generally run on clusters of servers, whereas standard VPS hosting will place your site on just one computer with a backup.

With VPS cloud hosting, your portfolio website will be back online immediately if any hardware fails.

A standard VPS can only offer a certain amount of RAM and CPU at a time so you can still experience outages if your site gets very busy. However, Cloud VPS can dynamically assign resources when your server needs them.

Conclusion

WordPress is one of the most common CMS (Content Management Systems) so a host should generally be good. But this is not always the case.

You need to choose a host that knows how to host them and has demonstrated it for a while.
