Liberation and Struggle: An Editor/Publisher's Experience with Open Access
Mark Mattaini

Last modified: 2007-07-14

Abstract

In this presentation, the author, the editor and publisher of the open access journal Behavior and Social Issues, will address his experience with taking the journal to open access in partnership with a major University Library. Many tasks are involved in publishing a high-quality journal, and many costs. Open access and a system like Open Journal System provide relief in some areas, but clearly not all. Moving to open access also produces new challenges, including philosophical struggles with editorial boards, the mechanics of the partnerships involved, and the commitment required for the volunteers who generally produce such journals. The presentation will suggest important next steps required to expand commitment to open access publishing among scholars and particularly among journal editor/publishers at a very applied, practical level.
