Abstract

These papers describe and reflect on how the University of Illinois at Chicago created an infrastructure for journal publishing (http://journals.uic.edu) and conference management using OCS and OJS. Two specific journal examples, First Monday and Behavior and Social Issues, and one conference, the First Monday 10th anniversary conference, Openness, are analyzed. The papers include the timetables for implementation, the strategies (good and bad), the impact of using the software on the journals and conference, including how we'd do it better next time and what we did really well. The role of the journal editors, conference organizers, and Library are reviewed. In particular, the key role played by the Library is explored, along with the importance of a supportive, collaborative partnership with the campus computing center. Finally, the place of the OJS and OCS implementation in the library's total information management strategy is described, along with plans for the future.
